Central Alberta Communities

Map of a region in Michigan with five hearts marking locations along US Highway 2, from around Crossroads and Downer near the south to near the top of the map, with city names such as Minaret, Duckery, Neapolis, Crossroads, Madden, Helmsdale, and Airlee.

From Airdrie to Olds, there’s a little something for everyone.

Read more about each community below and discover the rural advantage to Small Town living. Not sure which community is right for you? No Problem! That's exactly what this page is for.

I work with Buyers and Sellers across Carstairs and the surrounding communities of Central Alberta....seven in total, each with its own flavour. Some are quiet villages, some are growing towns, one is a full-on city. Below you'll find a quick read on each, so you can start to figure out which one might feel like home.

You'll notice Calgary isn't on the list. That's on purpose. I don't sell Calgary because I don't live there....I live out here, and what I know is what's out here.

Rural Alberta changed me. It will change you too.

Carstairs

This is home. My husband and I have lived here for over 4 years with our three kids, Lucy, Theo, and Sullivan, and honestly....it feels like we've been here our whole lives.

Carstairs is Calgary's "bedroom" community....close enough for a day in the city, far enough to feel like the HEART of Alberta. We've grown from around 2,300 people in 2001 to over 5,300 today, and most of that growth is families looking for a real place to raise kids. You'll find new builds in Mandalay, established homes near downtown, and acreages just outside town limits. Strong schools, an arena, a curling club, and enough small business in town that you don't need to drive 45 minutes for the basics.

This community of mine felt like home from the moment we drove through. It might do the same for you.

Didsbury

Didsbury sits about 15 minutes north of my Carstairs, and it goes a step deeper into small-town Alberta. The brick downtown is original....boomtown architecture from the early 1900s that survived because the town wrote it into bylaw. Lots are generally bigger than what you'll find in newer builds, and the population (around 5,100) has held pretty steady for years....which tells you something about the people who live here. They stay.

K-12 schools, its own hospital, and a real sense of community history. If you want mature trees, brick storefronts, and a slower pace....Didsbury is worth a look.

Olds

Olds is the biggest of the bunch at around 9,500 people, and the most self-sufficient of the lot. Olds College anchors the town and keeps it lively year-round with students, faculty, and agricultural research. There's a full-service hospital, and the municipal fibre network (O-NET) means most of the town has gigabit internet....a big deal if you work from home like a lot of my clients do now.

The commute to Calgary is closer to an hour, so most Olds folks either work local or work remote. Real estate runs from heritage homes near 50th Avenue to new builds on the east side. There's a lot of life in this one.

Crossfield

Crossfield is the closest town on this list to Calgary....about 30 minutes from the north edge of the city, and growing fast for exactly that reason. Up 20% in the last five years.

Population is around 4,000. Downtown is small but practical, the new subdivisions are filling, and the highway access to both Calgary and Airdrie makes this the easiest commute of any of my communities. Good fit if you want out of the city but aren't ready to give up a same-day round trip.

Cremona

Cremona is small. Like....really small. About 450 people, sitting on the Cowboy Trail (Highway 22) just west of Carstairs. Everyone here knows everyone. Most of the property nearby is acreage rather than in-town lots, and the school runs K-12 in one building.

If you want foothills views, room for horses, real quiet, and a community where the word "neighbour" still means something....this one might be it. It's not for everyone, and that's kind of the point.

Mountain View County

Mountain View County is the rural M.D. that wraps around Carstairs, Didsbury, Olds, and Cremona. If you've been looking for an acreage, a hobby farm, or a quarter section....you've been looking in here.

The county stretches east from Highway 22 out to the prairie, and it holds some of the best mixed-farming land in Alberta. Buying rural is a different process than buying in town....well water, septic, fencing, road access, zoning....and it's the kind of thing I really want to walk through with you in person before you fall in love with a place. No Problem! We'll get there together.

Airdrie

Airdrie is the largest community I serve and the closest to Calgary....about 20 minutes up the QEII, with over 90,000 people. It's grown faster than nearly any city in Canada, and that growth comes with what you'd expect: new subdivisions, big-box shopping, real traffic at rush hour. It's a city.

If small-town is what you're after, Airdrie probably isn't it. But if you want a short commute, full city amenities, and prices that still beat Calgary....it's worth a look.

Still not sure which one?

That's the question I get most often, and honestly....there's no one answer. It depends on commute, budget, lot size, schools, and what kind of community you want around you. The fastest way to figure it out is to talk it through together. I will help you navigate all of your options so you can make the most informed decision.
